Today in 1903 Orville Wright made the first ever powered flight, going 37m in 12 seconds. A piece of the aircraft was taken to the moon aboard the Apollo 11 mission. Just 115 years later, we have a robot on Mars. https://t.co/WDWQ9Z1dXl

I loved this idea from the mfl dept in last week. It's a vocabulary game in which students get different points for vocab learnt on different weeks. Great to recycle language. I'm using it to revise for next assessment. https://t.co/h7lgoIINZN

George McMillan Principal

Mr McMillan has been Principal of Harris Academy Greenwich since January 2011 and is a National Leader of Education (NLE). Originally from Glasgow, he graduated from Aberdeen University with an MA in English Literature, and then from Edinburgh University with a PGCE and a burning desire to teach.  Mr McMillan taught English for five years at a secondary school in Edinburgh serving one of the most deprived areas in Scotland, latterly having a whole school remit in charge of promoting positive behaviour.  Shortly after moving to London in 2006 he met Dr Tomlinson who was then the Principal at Harris Academy Chafford Hundred, and joined his Senior Team at the school which at the time was in ‘Requires Improvement’ and is now Outstanding in every category.

After working together at Chafford for five years, they came to what is now Harris Academy Greenwich to lead the turnaround and help the school achieve Outstanding status in every category – and they have loved every minute.  Dr Tomlinson is now the Regional Director of the Harris Federation, but remains committed to the school and is one of our Governors.

Mr McMillan has a Masters in English Literature, a Diploma in Educational Leadership, has the NPQH and is a Senior Practitioner with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC). As part of his role in the Harris Federation Teaching School Alliance, he trains staff on the NPQML, NPQSL and NPQH leadership programmes.  He passionately believes that students should feel inspired at school and that teachers should be happy and highly motivated at work.  Having a safe and positive environment at school where everyone can have fun, work hard and thrive is a key part of the Academy’s success story.  Mr McMillan is "fiercely proud" of the students and staff he leads.

Our School Journey

We took over the leadership of the Academy in January 2011 and it has been an honour and a privilege to lead the school from Special Measures to Outstanding in this time, and joining the Harris Federation.  Harris Academy Greenwich is unrecognisable compared to the predecessor school, with results in the top 20% of England four years in a row at GCSE and A Level.  We are the top parental choice for non-selective education in Greenwich and are heavily over-subscribed, with a thriving “Outstanding” Sixth Form.  This has been achieved without game playing with admissions, catchments or curriculum - just great teaching and a relentless focus on self-improvement.

The ethos of the school centres around our vision to step into our greatness so our students can step into theirs.  Our culture of courage, integrity, success and happiness both for staff and students makes this such a lovely place to work and learn, where we combine a modern approach to education with traditional values of respect and good discipline.  We recruit staff who love to teach and who are passionate about leading all students to success in whatever shape or form that might take.  The atmosphere is always really positive and we pride ourselves on getting to know every single one of our students by name, not just as a number or a statistic.

Whether you are interested in sending your child here, or are interested in working here, you can be assured that this is an brilliant school.  We are rather proud of it!
