Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Vision Statement
Harris Academy Greenwich
“Diversity is a fact. Equality is a choice. Inclusion is an action. Belonging is an outcome.”
- Arthur Chan
Our Vision
At Harris Academy Greenwich, we are committed to creating an inclusive, kind and empowering school environment where every individual—student or staff—feels seen, heard, valued and safe to thrive. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) are not standalone initiatives; they are woven into the fabric of who we are and what we do, every day.
We recognise that structural discrimination exists in wider society, and we commit to challenging it—through education, empathy, accountability, and action. We do this not only because it’s our legal duty, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Our goal is to foster a strong sense of belonging, where identity is celebrated, not just tolerated. We strive to ensure that no part of a person's background, identity or experience ever becomes a barrier to their success.
Our Commitment
- Celebrate the achievements of all and champion those who have the courage to inspire change.
- Educate ourselves and others to avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes or unconscious biases.
- Empower students and staff to speak up when something isn’t right, and listen openly when we are challenged.
- Take responsibility for mistakes and view them as opportunities for growth.
- Challenge discrimination wherever we see or hear it—respectfully but clearly.
- Model kindness, respect and allyship through language, behaviour and leadership.
We believe in creating psychological safety across our school community, so everyone feels confident in contributing ideas, voicing concerns, and being their authentic selves.
How we bring our vision to life
Curriculum & Celebration
Staff master the powerful knowledge allowing them to be fluent in challenging othering. Each term, we spotlight and celebrate communities with protected characteristics through a rich programme of assemblies, tutor sessions, school displays, and themed events. These include:
- Black History Month
- LGBT+ History and Pride
- Neurodiversity Week
- International Women’s Day
- Culture Day – a joyful celebration of the global heritage and lived experiences that enrich our school community.
Our aim is that students see themselves represented in our curriculum and culture—realising that they too carry greatness within them.
Staff Training & Role Modelling
We provide all-staff training each term to improve awareness, language, and action around EDI. Topics covered in 2024/25 included:
- Challenging discriminatory language around race, gender, religion, sexuality, and disability
- Understanding microaggressions
- Creating inclusive classrooms and safe spaces
Staff are supported in modelling inclusive language, challenging inappropriate comments, and empowering students to do the same with confidence.
Measuring impact
To ensure this vision translates into real-world change, we commit to regular review and reflection. Each term, our EDI Lead and Head of School evaluate:
- How well EDI actions were implemented
- Evidence of strengths and areas for growth
- The impact of these actions on students, staff and school culture
- Next steps to deepen inclusion and belonging
In their words
We believe the best way to measure progress is to listen. Here's what members of our school community have said:
“I feel like I can be myself here. No one laughs at my culture or the way I speak.” – Year 8 student
“Culture Day helped me learn more about my friend’s traditions and I felt proud to share my own.” – Year 10 student
“The training helped me understand how to challenge discriminatory comments with confidence and care.” – Staff member
Final word
Inclusion is not an endpoint—it’s an ongoing journey. At Harris Academy Greenwich, we walk that path together, guided by kindness, courage, and a shared belief in every individual’s worth and potential.
