Modern Foreign Language

In Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9), students begin an exciting journey into French and Spanish, learning to communicate about themselves, their families, school and daily life while discovering cultures across the French- and Spanish-speaking world. As their confidence grows, they describe holidays, social lives, local areas and personal identity using present, past and future tenses. Cultural study—from café traditions and festivals to global role models—builds curiosity, empathy and respect for others. By the end of Year 9, students can express opinions, narrate events and discuss wellbeing, relationships and aspirations with increasing fluency and independence.
In Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11), students deepen their linguistic accuracy and cultural understanding through topics such as media, lifestyle, education, holidays, the environment and future careers. They master complex grammar, use multiple tenses confidently and communicate detailed ideas in speaking, reading, writing and listening. Learning also develops global awareness, active citizenship and appreciation of multilingualism. By the end of GCSE, students are confident communicators, prepared for further language study and equipped with valuable skills for international careers and participation in a connected world.
