Year 7 Applications for September 2026 start

The banding test

In order to ensure that the Academy continues to be truly comprehensive, pupils sit a band test in year 6 once they have applied.  The aim is to admit the same proportion of students from each ability band and in this way we can ensure that our Academy will continue to serve students of all abilities. The non-verbal reasoning 'banding test' organises children into 9 bands according to their scores on the test with 9 being the highest band and 1 the lowest. We use a national formula to establish how many places we offer in each band for example there will be 36 places offered in the average band 5 but only 7 places offered to bands 1 and 9.

Banding test

All pupils must sit the banding test, as if they do not they will be disadvantaged. They will go into an 'untested' band which will have lowest priority.

You must complete the Local Authority Common Application Form. This is all you need to do to be invited in for the main banding test. If you require a concession in the admission test (for example for SEN or medical needs), you must complete the supplementary information form which can be downloaded from the bottom of the page and return it directly to the academy along with medical or professional evidence and proof of residence by the agreed date (to be confirmed).  If your child has an EHCP, their application will be through a separate route (being named on the EHCP) so those pupils do not have to do the banding test.

Please note that the completion of a supplementary information form for Harris Greenwich does not constitute an application to the academy. Do not submit the supplementary form unless you are applying for the early banding test or your child requires extra time for the main banding test.

The Application to Year 7

Applications are completed through the Local Authority's CAF click here for this.

All parents who name Harris Academy Greenwich on the Common Application Form (CAF) will be automatically sent an invite for their child to sit the banding test, if they have not sat it already. There is the option to complete a supplementary form for extra support: a supplementary form should only be completed if your child requires extra time.  If you submit a supplementary form but do not require extra time then this will be discarded.

The following table outlines the bands and the furthest distance offered in 2025-26. This can only act as a guide because it cannot tell you the true figures for this academic year.

We write to all parents/carers with the exact time of the test approximately one week before the testing day. If you have named more than one Harris Academy on the Common Application Form you will only need to sit the test ONCE and will be notified as to which academy will be contacting you with details of your child's/ward's appointment.
